new7holeOne day when my wife and I had time for a quick nine last fall, I decided to visit a 9 holer that I hadn’t played before — Twin Woods Golf Course in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

I’m not going to pretend that Twin Woods is anything more than a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. But so many of our country’s 9 holers are like that — they’ll never host a State Open or Amateur Championship, but there is just something fun and pure about their simplicity. What they lack in amenities, they more than make up for with charm.

In the case of Twin Woods, it began with a friendly greeting from the gal behind the counter. And real conversation… not just a glazed look and a hand extended to take your money. Then came a strong start — the first hole is straight, but strong at 410 yards and out of bounds all the way up the left side.

Number 2 is also healthy, a 185 yard par 3 with more OB left. Then things get quirky (not always in a positive way) from here on out. There are a bunch of sharp doglegs that are a little too short before they make their 90-degree turn, taking driver out of the hands of even modest hitters, like me. Most of them are too sharp to really work the ball around the corner…but on the par 4 4th, for example, I drove it through the fairway and even though I had a shot… I had no shot. Maybe 20 years ago I could navigate 220 into a stiff wind and over a pond. Now, I don’t think so.

There were several others with that characteristic, but I’m not complaining. I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The par 3 5th is pictured here: playing 160 into a stiff wind, I had to try to thread a 5 hybrid through that tight chute. Yikes!

Here’s a look back from behind the green on the par 4 7th:

While there are better 9 holers to play in the Philadelphia area, I wouldn’t shy away from Twin Woods if you like to experience these types of layouts.   It is certainly no pushover, and a pleasant walk in the park.

Rates:  $15 on weekdays, $20 on weekends for 9 holes… pull carts $2, riding carts $10 for 9 holes
